TestimonialsRead what clients and other pet care professionals say about Pia and K-9 Insight Obedience. If you would like to speak to anyone directly, please contact K-9 Insight Obedience at (650) 596-WOOF (9663) or e-mail info@k9insight.com for contact information. ![]() "For approximately two years Pia was associated with our facility and during that time she was an asset to our group. She did all of our In-Kennel training as well as group obedience classes. Pia was always very pleasant to be around and helpful under any circumstances, which is so important in a pet care facility. Her appearance was always in good taste and she was knowledgeable. Having been involved with dogs both breeding, showing and boarding, I appreciate the value of working with a dog's natural instincts and behavior to have them perform as you wish without losing their "fire". I refer to this as "golden hands". In the twenty-five years in the dog world, I have witnessed very few people with this ability. I believe Pia is one of these people."
L. Jas Lockwood, Ph.D. ![]() Pia, My Pit Bull mix Molly is a recent graduate of your winter Grumpy Pup class. I am very happy to report that I have not had a single incident of Molly's aggressive behavior since the class ended, and she has had plenty of opportunities. She even spent 8 days at Pet Camp in San Francisco recently. At Pet Camp she played with the other dogs every day and never got into trouble. I was actually amazed. I still carry a baggy of Nature's Balance with me on our daily off-leash romp in the park and that's all that's ever needed to keep her calm when a strange dog comes around. Thank you for your time and the very successful "de-grumping" of Molly! Jim McCrae & Molly (Pit Bull mix) ![]() To Pia and the rest of the great K-9 Insight team of instructors: I wanted to pass on my thanks for a great experience at the beginning obedience class that Julie and I completed last week. I am very pleased with my experience with K-9 Insight and plan to return for additional training. I was very impressed with your knowledge of canine behavior and techniques for training. If there is such a thing as "horse whisperers" you must be the equivalent of "dog whisperers".
Thank you! ![]() Pia, I wanted to let you know I really enjoyed the Grumpy Pup class and feel Cinnamon did real well with it - we both learned a ton! Was incredibly impressed with how you predicted EXACTLY how she'd react and "grow" as the class proceeded. You were right on the money! Cinnamon progressed real well. Was quite impressed with the one class where we were all in the same room (out of our barricades) and Cinnamon was actually sitting and laying down with the other dogs in the same room. Never thought I'd see it; expected her to be climbing the walls trying to get to the other participants. I was equally impressed with the last class (on the street) with her progress and how close she came to the other dogs without going bonkers! I'm very impressed with you, your predictions and prognoses, and the K-9 Insight Obedience School in general and will recommend you to ANYONE seeking help with their dog. Thanks. Good job! Jack Red & "Cinnamon", Boxer ![]() "I highly recommend Pia McGovern and K-9 Insight Obedience to anyone who wants obedience instruction or has a behavior problem with their canine companion. Pia's own German Shepherd dog is definitely one of the better behaved and well-adjusted dogs I have seen in our office. We value the trust our clients have in us. When we refer them to K-9 Insight Obedience we feel confident that Pia will follow our philosophy and take care of our clients' needs. In the three years we have been referring to K-9 Insight Obedience we have received only very positive feedback from these valued clients. Any community is very fortunate to gain a caring and concerned obedience instructor with the knowledge and experience Pia provides through K-9 Insight Obedience."
Richard L. Baer, DVM, Hospital Director ![]() "As an earnest animal lover and owner of a pet care business, I've had the opportunity to know Pia both as a colleague, and also as her client. I've built my business on the quality of service I deliver. My standards are high regarding my staff, my services, and for those around me and I'm very particular about who I recommend to my clients because it reflects on me. Pia is a canine training and behavioral professional I've come to know, and would highly recommend to anyone without hesitation! She is very committed to the animals she trains, and has great humanity, insight and experience regarding animal behavior. I was so impressed with her level of knowledge, that I asked her to help with my own dog's behavior problem. In just three visits, both my dog's and my behavior has changed. Not only has our behavior changed, Pia has provided our family with a greater perspective on how to live more responsibly with our beloved animal and enjoy him more fully. It is clear that her depth of experience and knowledge, plus her ability to articulate precisely and relate intelligently to the animals and their owners, has contributed to her success."
Arlene Wong ![]() "Pia worked with us at Day Care For Dogs, for three years. The facility is a 2-acre out door enclosure, where the dogs romp and play during the day. Pia's responsibilities consisted of determining what dogs weren't compatible, which needed to be separated. She was in charge of supervising socialization between dogs and introducing new ones to the pack, as well as performing the temperament/behavioral evaluations of new dogs to determine their suitability for our day care environment. Pia also met and talked with prospective customers who came by to look at the facility and to find out more about our operation. It has been my privilege to have Pia work with us for these past three years. She demonstrated unusual skill in dealing with and caring for the dogs and proved to be a great source of help to me in advising and educating my staff, and myself, on dog behavior and training. Pia also has a broad knowledge in canine health and was always very quick to notice when something didn't seem "right" with a particular dog, and knew what to do about it. I was impressed with her intelligence and her sense of responsibility in whatever effort she made. She was extremely sensitive and patient when dealing with and handling the dogs, and was always very positive and enthusiastic about the work. Both dogs and staff loved her! It's perfectly clear to me that she is in the right field of work, she has a true passion for dogs and she understands them! Pia was exceptional with our human customers as well. I got only very positive feedback about her. Some of her own obedience clients have been coming to the facility, and speaking with their owners, only further assured me that Pia is a very talented and well educated dog trainer. She will be an invaluable resource to any dog owner who needs help in teaching obedience or solving behavioral problems. I recommend her highly!"
Janet Leech ![]() To K-9 Insight, I wanted to send you this note to express my appreciation for all that you have done to develop Abbey's social skills. She has come along way and I couldn't have done it without you. If you remember:
We adopted Abbey from a rescue shelter in Berkeley in April 2003. Abbey was always very good with people but the few times we exposed her to other dogs she became very nervous and timid. I enrolled Abbey in the Beginning Obedience class through K-9 Insight in May. Prior to the class Abbey had her evaluation with Planet Pooch to attend daycare. Abbey was very scared and nervous around the screening dog and any other dog she saw at the premises and did not pass her initial evaluation because of being so nervous. When we attended our first obedience class she was so scared she hid behind my chair and didn't want to see or make contact with any of the other dogs. Pia recommended that we bring Abbey to The Little Paws playgroup on Sunday mornings to help her with her socialization with other dogs. The first few times we brought Abbey she was very afraid of even the littlest of puppies and still continued to hide behind my chair in a safe zone. After continuing to bring Abbey to the playgroup on Sundays she has not only become more comfortable being around the other puppies and dogs she truly enjoys it. We have seen her go from hiding behind my chair to running around and playing with some of the more aggressive puppies within the group. Abbey's curiosity through exposure has helped her become more interested and interactive with the playgroup. She gets so excited when we pull up to the training facility I can barely keep her under control. She still remains cautious of some of the dogs, but overall she is mixing it up with the best of them. I want to express my gratitude for giving Abbey this outlet to gain confidence with herself and develop the socialization skills needed to be with other dogs. We wouldn't be at this position if it wasn't for the attention and assistance Pia has provided in mentoring Abbey in situations were she might be apprehensive and even sometimes reluctant to participate. Now when we bring her to the playgroup she wanders from dog to dog introducing herself and being a very active member in the playgroup. I cannot tell you how gratifying it is to see Abbey so happy around the other dogs after she had started off so scared. I strongly recommend Pia and K-9 Insight for their knowledge and assistance with every aspect of raising a happy, confident and obedient dog. I have learned so much in the last few months I feel that I am providing Abbey the positive reinforcement she needs to continue to grow and we will definitely be joining the Intermediate class in the Fall. Thank you for everything! Mike Henderson & "Abbey", Lab mix ![]()
Dear Dog Lovers,
I am really, really cute and sweet, but I have some problems ... I was tied up in a dark and unsafe back yard for the first 2 years of my life, and was treated badly by my owner who would get mad at me when he was drunk. A nice lady rescued me from him. I got to stay with her and her family for 6 wonderful weeks, but she had a couple of kids and so many other dogs already that there was no way she could keep me, and so she hoped the animal shelter would be able to find a good home for me. I was at the shelter for almost 2 months when a really wonderful young woman fell in love with me and decided to take me home with her. The shelter people didn't tell her about my problems, hoping that they might get better with a new life of love and affection. Well, little by little, my new mom discovered lots of things about me: I have severe separation anxiety ... which is understandable since everyone I ever loved has left me ... but it caused big problems with the neighbors. And since I'm a Hound, I like to follow scents, and so I can be difficult to walk on a leash. To make matters worse, it seemed that on leash I was aggressive to other dogs because I would bark loudly and lunge toward them and these days people are pretty scared of dogs. Even worse, I would also bark and lunge at bicyclists, runners, rollerbladers ... anyone going by me fast. And, as if that wasn't enough, my new mom's boyfriend's dog hated me, and she would start fights with me, which made my mom upset and scared. So I was a handful! I couldn't stay home alone, and she couldn't take me on walks without so much stress that it wasn't fun to take me out. Even working with a private trainer didn't begin to address any of these serious problems. Because I couldn't stay alone, my grandma "dog sat" for me lots of days, and I got to know her and her dog Jazzy really well. I liked visiting them, but really loved my mom best even though I couldn't help making her sad instead of happy. Well, after 3 months of trying with a behaviorists and a trainer, and no change, my adoptive mom just couldn't take it anymore. She was totally discouraged and exhausted from stress and sadness, and so she took me back to the shelter. I don't blame her. She didn't have any idea when she adopted me that I would have so many problems. Everything that could go wrong went wrong for us. When my grandma found out, she called the shelter and made them promise to call her if they didn't find another home for me to try. I was there for one whole month, and then my number was up ... So my grandma came and got me because she loved me and wanted me to have another chance, hoping that with determination and lots of posters and rescue web sites truthfully telling my story, she would be able to find the right home for me. Even though grandma had known about the problems my adoptive mom had found out, she was surprised at how exhausting it was to try to walk me because of my barking and lunging and tracking instincts, and after just a few days she really understood what my mom had gone through! She began to think that it would be impossible to find a safe and loving home for a big troublemaker like me. With all my problems, she wasn't sure she could find anyone who would work that hard just because I'm such a cutie! One good thing, though, was that because I now had a doggie companion to stay with while she was at work I didn't bark at all, so that was easier. Discouraged and already tired after only a short time, my grandma began to feel that maybe there would be no home for me, and that to protect me from being tossed around from one home to another and another, maybe it would be safest for me to be put down after all. Then the miracle happened and my bad luck turned to GREAT luck! By a quirk of fate, we found out about Dan at Planet Pooch in Redwood City, and he set us up to meet Pia. Right away we could tell that she understood dogs, and that she really cared! She listened to what my problems were and very carefully and professionally discussed each issue at length. After an evaluation she set up various ways we could test my behaviors, one at a time, and try to learn why I was acting the way I did. We did lots of sessions where we walked on leash and met other dogs walking with their people: big dogs, little dogs, girl dogs, boy dogs, fluffy dogs, sleek dogs, all kinds! Then we went to Stanford Shopping Center in the middle of the day and walked around for over an hour to see how I reacted to people and baby carriages and other shopping mall experiences. Later we went to some dog parks to see how I get along with other dogs off leash. And we started socializing me with other dogs, off leash, in carefully selected and safely monitored groups at Planet Pooch. We learned some amazing things! We've learned that I'm not aggressive to other dogs ... I just want to get to know them by getting a chance to say hi and do the sniff test. (I never got a chance to be socialized with other dogs when I was growing up!) And I'm NOT aggressive to people, unless they are threatening: moving fast or running. My grandma is more confident, so I don't feel as insecure as I did at first, and that helps too. We learned that I get along with other dogs really well in group settings! And we learned that I'm not bone or food aggressive and that I'm safe around kids. And so we have set out on a program to make things better for me and for my grandma, and in just a short time, lots of things have gotten better. Pia is very kind and gentle, and has great treats! Her experience and confidence immediately let me know that she's "top dog"! She uses positive reinforcement, which rewards me when I do good things. And she tries to distract me, but NEVER punishes me when I do bad things. Pia knows dog psychology ... she uses tested methods to determine WHY we dogs do the things we do. Only by understanding can the humans that love and care about us find the right way to help us be better companions. It's way more complicated than just learning to sit and stay and heel. This is BIG, important stuff. My humans did not get the right kind of help with the other behaviorists and trainers, and because of that I nearly lost my chance at a happy life. Because of Pia, all that is changing. Through Pia's knowledge and my grandma's determination and dedication, I know things will just keep getting better and better. If you love your dog and you think things are hopeless, I urge you to talk about your problems with Pia. She has literally saved my life! Pia hasn't taught me to answer the phone yet, but you can call my grandma if you want to talk to her."
(Wagging Tail) P.S. Thanks, Pia, for the great changes you've made in my life! ![]() "I met Pia McGovern in 1996 when she came into our store to drop off brochures for her dog training school, K-9 Insight Obedience. Since then we have had the pleasure of seeing her on a regular basis, not only as she is checking on her material, but also as valued customer. Pia is very personable and outgoing and shows great knowledge about dogs. She generously gives advice to our customers, and the staff, on dog behavior and training when asked for her opinions. We have confidently referred our customers to Pia and K-9 Insight Obedience over the years and have received nothing but excellent feedback. Customers frequently praise her friendly personality, her enthusiasm and passion for her work and the dogs. They comment on her informative and detailed hands-on instruction and her ability to solve problems. They praise Pia for her easy to understand explanations of why dogs do what they do and her expert guidance on how to work with and train their dogs. I highly recommend her!"
Mike Hazelton, Manager ![]() "We just wanted to tell you how happy and proud we are with improvement in Sweet Pea after your training and counseling! As you know, when we "inherited" Sweet Pea, she had a history of biting people, consistently peeing in the house, and beating her head on the bars when put into a crate or kennel. Since you've been working with us and her, people remark on what a different dog she is than a few months ago and her problems have disappeared. We've also learned so much from you about Sweet Pea's breed, and that has helped us become better "parents". In addition, your suggestions as to changing her diet, using Day Care For Dogs, and other recommendations too numerous to list, have given us a happy, healthy Shar-Pei that we can be proud of, instead of worried about. Although we tease about you being Sweet Pea's "doggies psychiatrist", having you visit us these past few months has been the best money we've spent. We spend evening with friends extolling your virtues, and, have mentioned your company and name to anyone that we run into that wants to talk about dogs!"
Sincerely, ![]() "Click! Working with the clicker while training Molly was fun for everyone! Pia is an excellent instructor for both owner and dog! I really liked letting Molly "guide" what "trick" she was going to learn. Using the clicker makes you watch your dog so you can break a behavior into steps, and as a result train successfully! I know for certain that both my dogs were excited to have Pia come and work with them. I highly recommend K-9 Insight Obedience to anyone trying to train their pups!"
Matthew Close ![]() "We were very pleased with the services we received! All questions were answered very thoroughly and if an answer wasn't available, we always got a call back. It's so hard to find good, competent people. We will miss Pia but wish her the best of luck on their new venture. If she begins a business where she is moving to, I recommend her services the best there are to be!"
Jim & Beth Walters ![]() "Excellent! Very straightforward, clear, thorough and informative! I felt confident that I was getting the best training instruction possible by Pia's confidence, knowledge and "insight"! For my puppy, the results speak for themselves and the techniques used for training work. Questions were always welcomed and given a well-thought out, logical answer. Handouts were great! This training gets recommended to everyone and their puppy or dog I meet who is interested in obedience training!"
Sheila Murphy
![]() "I'm so glad I met Pia in the park! Lucas is doing so much better with his training because Pia taught me to be a better trainer. I loved the humane techniques and approach she took in training. I can't wait to take more sessions!"
Jennifer Cole ![]() "We enjoyed Pia very much! We learned a lot about how to control our rambunctious puppy! We are using the Gentle Leader for his walks. He is so much better! I find your exercises to work with him, to be very helpful. He no longer jumps up or nips my daughter, which was important to me. Thank you, Pia!"
Darby Lewis ![]() "Pia treated our puppy Sandi as if she was her own. She was always enthusiastic and always seemed to know the right thing to do. At different times I attended group puppy/dog training and was disappointed with the aggressive training methods the other trainer demonstrated. Pia is firm but compassionate with the dog! Sandi loves her! I will continue to use Pia one-on-one in the future. Just the right combination!"
Debbie Wilhelm ![]() "The training from K-9 Insight Obedience was as much about training me as it was about training my four-month-old puppy. K-9 Insight Obedience gave me a look at what was most likely going on in my dog's mind and how I needed to respond to Murray to get her attention in order to successfully modify the puppy's behavior it worked! The instructor, Pia, was always encouraging and positive and Murray really liked and listened to her that was important to me! K-9 Insight's in-home training worked around my schedule very convenient."
Jeff Demarest ![]() "It was a wonderful course! It gave me a much better understanding of how dogs think and react and how important it is to give "dog commands" properly. I would love to take the next level! I highly recommend K-9 Insight Obedience!"
Erin Blanchard ![]() "Having never had a dog before, I got Chester after he had been abandon at the age of less than one. He had some emotional problems and didn't know much of anything. Small and very personal group classes with K-9 Insight Obedience proved to be great for both of us and it made it easy for both dog and owner to focus. Lots of individual attention, patience and encouragement from Pia, the instructor. The classes were very informative and detailed among many things I learned how to interpret my dog's behavior and communicate in "doggie-language" and to train with positive reinforcement. It was fun and very rewarding!"
Susan Hoff ![]() "We learned so much through K-9 Insight Obedience! I was ready to give Rosie back to the shelter but through group classes and private behavior consulting and instruction, I gained a greater understanding of my dog's behavior and we were able to work much better together. Now I wouldn't give her up for anything! Pia was very patient and loving with each and every dog in class she provided well-educated information on behavior and training, as well as great enthusiasm! I would recommend K-9 Insight Obedience anytime!"
Kay McGarvin ![]() "Bronson was almost out of control. After hundreds of dollars spent on training, he still didn't "know" anything and would not respond to me. With K-9 Insight Obedience, he learned in less than one hour how to sit and stay, and to down. It was truly amazing! Pia made me look at training from a dog's perspective and showed me how to use my voice and body language, in working with, and controlling my dog. She made me see the importance of me becoming "Top Dog", and explained how to do it in a force free way that made sense to my dog. It was very exciting!"
Marcy Rogers ![]() "This course proved to be extremely helpful to me! Allie had been rather difficult to train due to her tremendous and "stubborn" will and my lack of time and effort to work with her consistently. The class really motivated me! I looked forward to each session and Allie loved being around the other dogs. Pia was very thorough and specific in communicating exactly what we needed to do. I also found her to be patient, very caring and quite sensitive to the frustrations along the way. Her love of animals and enthusiasm for her work made it a real pleasure to learn. She is extremely competent in animal training and very knowledgeable in animal behavior. I trust her completely and respect the way she works with the animals and their owners. Her personal qualities compliment her professional skills quite nicely and I would recommend her and K-9 Insight Obedience to any dog owner seeking training. Thank you!"
Kay Etheridge ![]() "When I first called K-9 Insight Obedience I was stressed out, overwhelmed and not enjoying my dog. I even considered giving her away. With Pia's help, lots of love, dedication, determination and patience I was able to meet the challenge of working with my dog and the results were awesome! I wouldn't even think about giving her up now! I found Pia to be timely, honest and straightforward in her approach. This training was for me just as much for my dog. With guided help, common sense and positive reinforcement, my dog is much better behaved and I'm more consistent. The key is listening to what Pia instructs you to do, do the work and constant reinforcement. Both dog and owner are much happier!"
Chris Kirkpatrick ![]() "Pia made very helpful suggestions on how to work with my dogs behavioral and obedience "problems" in a no nonsense straight forward manner. It has made a huge difference! I really recommend her!"
Julia Mittelstadt ![]() "Received excellent instruction in helping Joey become more relaxed with other dogs. Pia is very dedicated to helping dog and owner achieve desired goals!"
Dorine Secrest ![]() "I learned a lot working with Pia! I wish I had found out about K-9 Insight Obedience last summer when instead I listened to people who said the problem with the cat would resolve itself in time. Thanks for all your help! I appreciate your flexibility in scheduling, too!"
Phyllis Brown ![]() "Dear Pia - Thank you for making us one big and happy family! I appreciated your patience and knowledge. You are extremely professional, warm and comforting - quite the combo! Kramer, Jessie and I feel lucky to know you! Please call and stay with us when you come back! Thanks Pia!"
Helen Hoffman ![]() "EXCELLENT, INVALUABLE! Have been recommending to friends! Thanks Pia!!"
Lisa Diamond-Peacoch ![]() "My private lessons with Pia were much more about training me than me watching Pia train Rosie. I received the knowledge I needed to ensure that Rosie turns out great! Pia is very insightful and a very good communicator. She really understands the workings of a dog's brain! I am very happy with her teachings!"
Brian Britt ![]() "Very impressed with Pia! She shows a lot of caring and knowledge! I recommend her!"
Pat Clark ![]() "I really appreciated Pia's ability to focus on some basic approaches/skills to help us better understand and work with Serene's "barking at other dogs" problem. I think she went out of her way to bring dogs to the training sessions as well as arrange for sessions at Day Care For Dogs. Pia was flexible about scheduling our sessions and was understanding about working around my childcare needs. Finally, the information material we received was very informative and interesting. I would certainly work with K-9 Insight Obedience and Pia again. Serene is now easier to manage and I feel like I understand her better!"
Clare Erlander ![]() "Randy was a very unhappy little dog. I feel Pia helped us train him in a very professional manner and her knowledge of dogs and cats is excellent!"
Dale Schwab ![]() "Pia, you were and are a great help to us better understanding the world of dogs! You went beyond when we had the upset of Guinness biting the groomer. We will definitely use you again and are happy to recommend you highly! Thank you so much!"
Jane & Dennis Herrick ![]() "Thanks, it's been great! My daughter is no longer afraid of her puppy and has good control of the dog! Our goals for the classes have been met. Thanks again!"
Mary Gaven ![]() "Thanks for helping us to identify the best way to correct Linus' dog fearful behavior. It was more a matter of changing OUR actions I think! We have already seen a huge improvement and hopefully it will only get better over the next several months."
Steve & Sally ![]() "The instruction my dog and I received was very useful! It gave me insight on how to coexist with and train Ali, and what her needs are. I think we will both be happier for taking the classes!"
Chuck Berkebile ![]() "Pia you really helped me and you "nailed" my problem right on the head - I love Gidget too much. I'm working on saving the "lovin'" for praise time. You pointed out so many important and helpful things in training her! I won't hesitate to call you for more lessons. Thanks!!"
Ginger Kantor ![]() "I enjoyed the lessons very much and was very pleased that Pia structured the instruction to what I wanted to know. She was very flexible in her scheduling and helped both me and my dog a lot with our behaviors!"
Christopher O'Connor ![]() "My husband and I feel that Brutus has shown marked improvement in obedience following you instruction! And we have learned how to utilize various signals to obtain that obedience. Thank you so much for all your help and excellent instruction to Brutus and us!"
Marjorie Hiedebrandt ![]() "Pia is great! Both my little guys loved her! If I get a new puppy in the future, I will definitely sign up with K-9 Insight Obedience, and Pia again!"
Betty Wang ![]() "Thank you Pia! Winnie and I enjoyed the course very much. We both learned a lot! I really liked your straightforwardness when giving instructions. You had constructive criticism. Thanks again!"
Kathy Barron ![]() "I enjoyed the course and techniques very much! It was very informative on why dogs perform certain behaviors and how to work with them."
