Rescue and Adoption
When Pia is not training dogs and their people, she volunteers her services to different rescue organizations in the San Francisco Bay Area. She frequently does temperament and behavior evaluations of dogs that will be put up for adoption for San Francisco Bay Area German Shepherd Rescue, Furry Friends Rescue, Grateful Dogs Rescue and the Humane Society of Silicon Valley, where she also volunteers as Dog Socializer Team Leader, training new volunteers how to interact with and socialize dogs at the shelter. She also helps with the rehabilitation and placement of homeless dogs in need through socialization and training classes, adoption fairs and community events. In October of 2004 Pia was asked by HSSV to evaluate, from the same house hold, 64 impounded (an event that brought huge media attention) Border Collies and mixed breed dogs, to determine which dogs were suitable for adoption and which ones were not. Pia is on the Board of Shore Dogs Dog Park Association in Redwood Shores and is the Park's canine behavior advisor. She also helps to put on Shore Dogs' annual fundraisers and organizes and sponsors the ever popular doggie games, "The Fastest Recall" and "Bobbing for Weenies" contests. In 2002 she was one of the driving forces and sponsors of the now Annual Redwood City Pet Parade, an event that promotes responsible pet ownership and education.
Pia is on the trainer referral lists of the San Francisco SPCA, Peninsula Humane Society, Marin Humane Society, Humane Society of Silicon Valley and Pets In Need. She is recommended by several of the most respected veterinarians on the Peninsula. She offers presentations on canine behavior to veterinary professionals, groomers, doggie daycare and rescue shelter staff.
In 2001 Pia and her associate Dan Daniels, founder and owner of Planet Pooch® Doggie Daycare, started a rescue group called NOVA - Network of Volunteers for Animals - dedicated to bringing together the resources of Bay Area rescue groups. ![]() Pia with Solomon - one of the first dogs adopted! |
