Mitra's BackgroundMitra's love for dogs began as a child with the two dogs (a German Shepherd and a Basenji) that were part of her family growing up. While studying for her BA in Psychology at the University of Delaware, she took up raising a "Seeing Eye" puppy while living on campus. Through the puppy raiser classes she learned and trained her puppy in basic obedience and more importantly socialized her puppy, Baxter, by taking him to her college classes and out in public places. About 18 months later Baxter had to go back to The Seeing Eye organization to become a guide dog but Mitra's passion for training dogs had only just begun. During her last year of college she began volunteering at the Delaware Humane Association helping to exercise and care for the shelter dogs. After graduating college she began working at Canine Partners for Life, a service dog organization, as a kennel manager. During this time she also raised several service dog puppies and they would accompany her everywhere she went from the grocery store to the movies so that they would be well socialized when placed. Mitra also on occasion taught some of the puppy raiser classes. Mitra wanted to gain more experience in dog training beyond the basics commands and had an interest in agility so she obtained Harmony, an Australian Shepherd. She began working with a local trainer on advanced/competitive obedience and started taking classes in agility. Harmony helped Mitra become more experienced at training dogs beyond basic obedience. She also began competing in agility, which Harmony absolutely loved and was great at! Harmony achieved her Novice Agility Title (NA) in competitive AKC agility in July 2001. Mitra's passion for training dogs that started with raising a "seeing eye puppy" deepened even more after she began working at a local animal shelter, Pets In Need in Redwood City. So many dogs end up in shelters because their previous owners think they are problem dogs when all they need is just a little training and they could be great family pets. By helping people train their dogs she knows she is helping them become those great family pets and helping families have a good relationship with their dogs. Mitra and her husband share their lives with three dogs, Harmony (an Australian Shepherd), Curly (a Standard Poodle), and Brittany (a Terrier mix).
